1. Functional-Based Therapy
Occupational therapists focus on meaningful "occupations" or "activities" of daily living. OTs work with clients in the areas of self-care, leisure and productivity to maximize their independence on a daily basis. This type of intervention ranges from providing assistive devices (i.e. sock aid, long handled reacher) to assist with dressing independently; to recommending a garden kneeler to assist with maintaining a favourite leisure activity.
2. Upper Extremity Rehabilitation
Occupational therapists are trained in providing upper extremity intervention that focuses on increasing strength, range of motion and coordination as it relates to a client's performance. Additionally, our OTs will make recommendations for an appropriate splint or ongoing home exercise program.
3. Compensatory Cognitive Strategies
When cognitive remediation is no longer an effective method to address a decline in a client's thinking, OTs are essential in providing strategies and techniques to enable an individual's independence. Intervention can range from using a smart phone or iPad to organize appointments and using apps to assist with daily reminders; to using assistive technology to assist with completing an assignment or task. Our OTs will assist with training a client or their family member in any environmental setting.
4. Mobility Aid Assessment and Prescription
Mobility prescription can be an intricate part of the rehabilitation process following a motor vehicle accident. IM-OT has occupational therapists that are Assistive Device Program (ADP) authorizers that can assist with government funding of walkers, scooters, manual and power wheelchairs. Their expertise in collaboration with your meeting your care needs will help you to obtain the safe mobilization for indoors and within the community.
5. Driver's Rehabilitation and Safety
Our occupational therapists play a key role in identifying cognitive deficits that may impede a client's ability to drive safely.
Our therapists conduct assessments and collaborate with a client's family doctor or geriatrician to ensure that flags are identified
and alternatives are explored for safe community mobility.
Always remember that driving is not a right, it's a privilege.
6. Falls Prevention
IM-OT believes in health promotion and awareness. Our OTs will visit your home environment and provide thorough assessment of any factors that may be contributing or may contribute to a potential fall. Recommendations regarding how to adjust your home, de-clutter areas and remove hazards can assist with preventing a serious injury. Our OTs will also provide consultation regarding devices/specialists that may be useful to assist clients who may be consistently falling at home.
